Understanding Job Roles and Responsibilities
Beginning a career in social media, while exciting, can also be confusing. You’ll have to experiment a little: with interviewing, with networking, and with different jobs within the same company or with different companies. What’s odd about social media is that, unlike many other more traditional careers, there are so many job titles and job descriptions that can mean so many different “experiments” that it can be wildly confusing.
Much of the uncertainty in social media roles and responsibilities is due to ambiguity or differing definitions on the part of employers; as I mentioned in chapter 1, “Making the Choice,” even at a senior level, your job is to “figure it out.” Figuring it out means: interpreting job titles and job descriptions, and when you land the job, figuring out what you will actually be doing. When you are attempting to interpret intent through opaque job descriptions, it can be like learning another language—one that will vary from employer to employer.
